Search Engines are still biggest source

of free traffic of the whole internet world. And SEO is important for our websites to drive more traffic from Search Engines.

Everyone knows that Search Engine Loves Content , even more if it is Unique and

Fresh content. To achieve this goal we started to use BLOGS instead of conventional websites, because it was easy to add new, fresh content in BLOGS than website..

Opps how hard early days were, you have to hard code the page in notepad in html, then run FTP and then upload the new page, link that page to the main navigation and so on…

But invention of blogs changed this and give us a platform to publish new content everyday with just one or few clicks. Traffic from search engines to Blogs has proved the importance of blogs.

Now when we agree that blogs are good for our free traffic tactics, we also know that best blogging script available online is Wordpress, which is free, open source, and best script available online. The very blogging script I am using here for this blog.

I observe almost every marketer online has already started a blog for his business, and almost every marketer has Wordpress installed. But ONE THING IS MISSING at SOME BLOGS. That is many blogs are not optimized for Search Engines. Even Wordpress has many built in SEO functions you can benefit. And one most favorite of mine is ability to change the URL Structure.

That is you can change the blog URL structure from http://www.MohsinRasool.com/blog/?p=49 to can be changed to more user and search engine friendly like this http://www.MohsinRasool.com/blog/Some-Post-Name

This help in many ways, firstly Search Engines love the URL with targeted keywords in URL, so you get benefit from Search Engines. And also when your link is presented to the USER, he get more educated guess that about what this URL is, so he is more willing to click the link like this instead of someblog.com/?p=49

How To: Here is how to do this in Wordpres - Login to your Wordpress blog and then click Options Menu, then select Permalinks from sub-menu. Now you can see a page where you can select many options. Second option is best for normal blog. But If you want to do some extra, select Custom option, and then in input field write this /%category%/%postname%/ then click Update Permalink Structure. It is DONE! But for some hosts maybe you have to do one extra step. i.e.

When you click Update Permanlink Structure Button , if it says like this : You should update your .htaccess now.

If your .htaccess file were writable, we could do this automatically, but it isn’t so these are the mod_rewrite rules you should have in your .htaccess file. Click in the field and press CTRL + a to select all.

Above message means that your host do not allow automatic update for .htaccess file. Now you have to do this. Just copy the code generated below in box just below the Update Button, and create a new file and paste this code in that file and name that file as .htaccess and upload this file in your blog root directory. This will work now!

So to take home lesson is that, search engines are biggest source of free traffic, we need traffic, so we need search engines, and search engines optimization is the correct way to get more search engine LOVE, and in SEO , content and keywords are very important. For content we use Blogs and in blogs we use Wordpress for best results, and wordpress provide you facility to optimize your URLs also by incorporating keywords in the URL.

Wishes,

Mohsin
